What is FEGLI?

FEGLI stands for Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance, the world's largest group life insurance program that provides life insurance to federal employees and retirees. It includes basic coverage equal to an employee's annual salary plus $2,000 and offers optional coverage (Option A, B, and C) that can be purchased for additional benefits, including family coverage. The cost of coverage increases with age, particularly for Option B, and it does not build cash value.

HOW IT WORKS:

Basic Coverage: The most fundamental part of the program. The coverage amount is your annual salary rounded up to the next $1,000, plus $2,000.

Example: Your salary is $70505, round up to $71,000 then add $2,000. Your basic FEGLI coverage is $73,000.
Optional Coverage: You can add this for more coverage:

Option A (Standard): Provides an additional $10,000 in coverage.
Option B (Additional): Allows you to purchase coverage in multiples of your salary, from one to five times your annual pay.
Option C (Family): Provides coverage for your spouse and eligible dependent children.
Eligibility and Enrollment: Most federal employees are eligible and are automatically enrolled in basic coverage. You have 31 days after being hired to elect optional coverage or waive basic coverage.
